my first project

hi, I’m completely new to robotics, so please forgive me for my ignorance.

I want to build something like this in the picture. Basically, I’d like to have an arm A move linearly along a beam. I want to be able to control its speed, and program different travel distances. The maximum travel distance is about 7 inches. I need to use AC power for this tool. Please give me some ideas what components I will need. I hope I can learn by building something.

Thanks a lot!

Consider using MicroRax as the support structure: lynxmotion.com/c-144-microrax.aspx
For the motion itself, consider a continuous rotation servo connected to a timing pulley and belt:

robotshop.com/en/mxls-01-hit … ulley.html
robotshop.com/en/60-tooth-mx … ulley.html

You would need limit switches at either end connected to a microcontroller (which you would have to program)

Thanks for the help!

A few more questions:

  • the tool is sort of like a lateral moving grinder. Can the belt driven pulley handle the friction resistance at the lower end of arm?
  • can a microcontroller set up a timer, for instance, running the arm back and forth for 5 minutes?

No clue - would have to know more about the tool, surface etc. A video would be nice.

Yes, and obviously much more if needed.

Thank you for your answer! I will do more research and give it a shot.
