I have a flywheel with a 5mm smooth hole and a 3.175mm smooth DC motor shaft. How do I mount the flywheel to the shaft?
I’m a software engineer by trade and brand new to all things mechanical, so thanks in advance. Do I need any special tools to do this?
It’s important that the flywheel be as balanced as possible on the hub because it will be spinning at high RPMs.
There are many ways, but one uses a 1/8" to 5mm shaft adapter (“coupler”) and a 5mm diameter shaft (to press fit into the center of the flywheel).
We can special order one which uses set screws, similar to the image below. If you’re interested, contact us (choose “Sales” department) asking for RB-Sct-00 <625162> “0.125in to 5mm Set Screw Shaft Coupler”
We can also special order 5mm diameter shafting, but it’s hard to say if it will be press fit into your flywheel
