Motor shield short circuit

Hi!

I am using the RB-Dfr-696 Quad DC Motor shield with an Arduino. There appears to be a short circuit on the motor shield, and I’m wondering if the board is faulty. The shield is stacked on top of the Arduino, with 4 DC motors connected. When I connect the 12V battery to the input power of the shield, the 20A fuse blows. When the power cable is disconnected from the shield, there is infinite resistance across the cable leads (i.e. it is not a short on my cable). I thought it may be that the H-bridge wasn’t initialized, so I powered up my Arduino first and set the motors to zero power, and then checked the power terminals on the shield and they buzzed out indicating a short.
