Motor Driver (or controller)

I am looking for a low cost solution for combat robotics. I have students working on 4 robots. They each weigh 15 pounds and have two drive wheels. The motors for the wheels are 24V DC brushed motors:

The robots are controlled with a Spektrum DRE transmitter and the Spektrum AR610 receiver. The receiver then sends signals to a motor driver which runs the wheels.

The motor driver is the Sabertooth dual 32 amp motor driver:

We have been having trouble with these. I think perhaps we are electrically damaging these motor controllers as we learn. I am looking for either a cheaper solution or perhaps motor controllers that are difficult to damage. Any ideas?

Hi Curt,

The Sabertooth is usually a very good choice for such setup.
Maybe there is something wrong in the use and / or wiring of the actual controller ?

Can you give us some pictures of your setup and explain the trouble you are experiencing ?

All the best,
