Mini Vtail Project

Recently I got my mini vtail together and mounted LD1510 motors with afroesc 12A from HK. Since I have been using F3 and F4 based fc for the last few years I decided to mount a Sparky F3 controller on the mini and use a custom vtail mix. Flew great but decided that to carry a 3s 1300ma and still have some pep I needed more power so swapped out the 1510 for some 2211 2300kv motors. On 3s these can handle a 6x3 and in fact have the same stator size as the “1806” motors you see for sale. The difference is these are CD pedestal mount motors so you do not have to flip the arms over. On the front motors you do need a 1/4" thick motor mount spacer to raise the motors up but the back motors bolt up fine. With the new mix and 6x3 props on the front and 5x4 on the back I can’t say I have flown a more fun quad in the past. Extremely easy to orient and at less than 500g AUW not enough weight to bust it up too bad in a crash. Any 2mm shaft motor is going to take a beating in a crash so the fact these are mounted higher doesn’t increase the risk of damage that much.

edit:added the motor rotation and mix table for TauLabs/OpenPilot fc boards. Slightly different setup than multiwii.

Here is what the LD1510 motors look like mounted. They do get warm when you get on them hard

PIDS and RATES for above setup on a TL/OP type flight controller. Multiwii is good to go for vtail and plenty of info available but if you happen to have a CopterControl or Sparky board this should help get it up and flying. With the posted rates you would probably want about 80% expo on the P/R tx channels to help smooth control when not doing flips and rolls.

Very nice explanation of your tests.
Thanks for sharing, i’m sure it will help many peoples here…
