Mini AUV project

Hi guys
I am currently working as part of a group on a min auv project. The size iof the craft is yet to be determined but we estimate it will be about 200mm x 200mm max. As it will be exhibited in a tank that is about 2m x 2m (1m depth).

The tank will have a number of obsticles which the AUV will be expected to navigate with no outside input. The problem we are having is with Obsticle detection. From the research i have carried out so far , even the smallest sonar units are much too large for are craft.

We have been experimenting with other ultrasonic sensors (parking sensors) , although we are not very confident of how they will perform under water.

Has anyone attempted to build a AuV of this size ? , or have any possible solutions to this problem ?

any help apprectiated

Thanks for the reply
WE have been testing various ultrasonic sensors and lazer / camera range finders with varrying results , but we are still yet to determin which if any of the sensors we will be able to use.

If any one has worked on such a project and has any suggestions , please feel free to fire them my way.

Thanks

Hi disorda,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum. Autonomous mini AUVs are still fairly new, and although I have built, tested (and lost) a mini AUV about 50cm long, it was controlled by a human and not “fully autonomous” by any standards. RobotShop does not have many underwater sensors, so we will keep our eyes out when looking for new suppliers. Hopefully others here can relate their experience.

Sincerely,
