I have a Stomper Sumo Combo Kit for Basic Atom that i purchased back in 2005 with 12 volt motors so my batteries are 12-14ish volts (depending on charge). Currently I am using a 9 volt dc cell battery for the electronic but it runs out pretty quick. I would like to power the electronics off my main motor batteries but the AtomBot Board says the electronics power input is only rated 7.2-9 vdc. My question is will i ruin my electronics if I powered them with my 12+ volt battery?
If the answer to that question is yes then is there an simple circuit i could build to drop my batteries down to 9 volts for the electronic circuit.
The official response is as long as you are not using 5vdc peripherals that take a lot of current, you should be ok with 12vdc as the VL input voltage. The problem arises when you power the VL with 12vdc and try to use the 5vdc regulator at full capacity, 500mA. Then the regulator has to dissipate 3.5w of heat. This will get hot as there is no heat sink. However when using the regulator to only power the Atom and Bot Board the regulator has to dissipate only 350mW.
