Through a capstone class in MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, students are developing the “Oystamaran,” a robot that can flip heavy bags of oysters, to allow the shellfish to grow on oyster farms. The project has demonstrated that robots can perform extremely useful tasks in the ocean, and will serve as a model for future innovations in aquaculture.
