Mandibles

If you would like to see the mandibles for my decapod (polypod) please see page 11 of Zenta’s Project Phoenix post. I have one message that provides a narrative description and another that provides photos.

I recently ordered parts for to build a CH3-R hexapod and was considering to stick mandibles. Was looking at the lynx5/6 parts to use as mandibles. The mandibles on your polypod is quite amazing…

Are you planning on sticking sensors in there so that you won’t over torque your mandibles when grabbing objects? Probably an IR sensor between the teeth and sensors at the end of it. You can probably use those two and make your polypod “nibble” at objects but not fully crunch them…

Curious, why aren’t Polypods sold anymore on LM? I see them for sale at various electronic stores online but I don’t see them on lynxmotion.com

I thought Polypod was one of the neatest bots out there. You can keep adding sections as you go…

They were discontinued last year I believe.

I basically needed to make more room for SES parts. I still plan to make an SES version of the PolyPod. I just need to finish the SES 2DOF leg design. It’s on my to do list too. :stuck_out_tongue:

:arch

You have a 2DOF leg design… its on your walking stick picture?

Naw, here is the info…

Oo! Looks like new parts are in SES’s future!

:joy

I saw that aluminum, in-line chassis. Was debating on going with that style or the H3-R style chassis. The in-line one looks more feasible to put mandibles on since the legs don’t get in the way…

The new 2DOF leg design is beautiful Jim! It’s a very no-nonsense design… Are you planning any “mandible” type of parts for the SES? I think a good mandible should have sensors either at the tip of each teeth or near where the servos are turning to determine how strong of a grip it is inducing on the object that it’s grabbing. Another thing to have is space for distance sensors (IR maybe?) to determine whether something is in range of the mandible to warrant a “bite.”

A set can be made I suppose by combining two humanoid hand kits that your biped humanoids use, except omit the “thumb” portion…

I am planning on adding a mandible to my soon-to-be-made-CH3-R-when-it-arrives-from-UPS (whew, say that 10 times! )

But it’s not really going to be mandibles, it’s going to be more like a Scorpion tail that grabs instead of stings…

Jim are those the new RC Shocks you were talking about? 8)

The inline one is slower to turn in place, but other than that it’s a good design.

Thanks, it’s still a prototype, but it’s progressing.

You can make mandibles form these. But no I don’t have a solution as you are describing it… yet.

Looking forward to seeing it.

That is the design I based my mandibles off of. All you need to do is make the lexan pieces a more crescent shaped. I was thinking about mounting an IR sensor for sensing when to close the mandibles - probably a break-beam setup.
