So I’ll admit I am completely new to the concept of 3d printing / prototyping. I do have some background in CMM programming and metrology however that was quite some time ago.
I am thinking of purchasing a makerbot for small part prototyping purposes. However I had a few questions.
First off what language does this thing speak? Can I simply import a solidworks file and have it make the part? Or do I need to learn some new language entirely?
Does it have the ability to produce a clam shell type part with bosses (on the inside / concave portion) for small screws (say 2mm ID)?
If you have links to documentation or literature - say a users guide to start that would be appreciated.
You would export your SolidWorks file as .stl
Import the .stl file to either ReplicatorG (free online), slicr (also free online) or Makerware (also free online).
Those software allow you to configure the print, slice the layer etc. You’ll need to play with and learn one or more of these software (not complicated and a lot of trial and error etc).
Yes - with support material. The alternative is to print it upside-down. If you want 2mm holes, you’ll need to choose a slow speed and high accuracy (which means a longer build time).
User guides for all the software is online on their respective website. The manufacturer has an active forum since this product is intended for “early adopters” who are ready to learn and troubleshoot (it’s not yet quite as easy as a desktop printer). Brochure Features
I’m not so much concerned about the speed so much the quality / resolution. I’m looking at this product in order to cut my own prototypes, test, modify, rinse, repeat. This 3d printer costs just a little more than what I’ve been quoted to run a single prototype part (in plastic). So there is no doubt in my mind it would pay for itself quickly.
Upside down? lol never thought of that - great suggestion.
I watched season 2 episode 9 regarding how to finish / smooth the model. That got me to wondering. Is it possible to use a lower resolution (say on the outer part of the previously discussed clam shell) to purposely give it texture, yet have it switch to high resolution to produce the bosses and internal connecting tabs / parts?
Lastly do you happen to know the turnaround to obtain a makerbot? Are they in stock and ready to ship?
