Lynxmotion 12A-BEC Failed Power On Smoke Test

Hi

I have built my quadcopter in stages and was very careful with my wiring. I went to attach the battery today and got a spark just touching the contacts.

I stripped the quadcopter down completely. It is a Lynxmotion HQuad500 Drone Kit. I have used only parts that were in the parts list for this unit if you were to purchase a full kit.

Battery: 11.1V 3500mAh 30C LiPo
ESC: Lynxmotion 12A Multirotor ESC 1A BEC (With Connectors)
Power Harness: Wiring Harness Quadcopter Power Distribution

Intending to test the entire wiring chain, I attached 1 ESC to the 4-1 power wiring harness. I attached the battery to the wiring harness and there is no indication of a short in the harness. (No Sparks), Since the ESC has connectors, it is not possible to reverse the polarity. When I plugged the battery to the single end of the wiring harness, the ESC began to sizzle and there was smoke.

Before I connect another ESC, to test, is there a problem with connecting an ESC to power when there are no other connections? ie, motor, flight controller.

Please advise

Tim
Edited to add the test of the unattached wiring harness and correct a error in grammar.

Hi Tim,

That’s been solved on our Support Center already i think.
Let us know once you receive your new harness and ESC’s that should solve the issue.

Unfortunate to have a faulty harness with wrong polarity connection.

Hi DiaLFonZo

Yes, thank you very much for your assistance in this matter. I will remember the lesson learned.

Just because it’s new in a package doesn’t mean nothing went wrong during manufacturing.

I will be in touch when I receive the package. I’ve checked twice with Canada Post and there has been no sign of it. I was really hoping to get the replacements quickly …

As long as it’s correct, I guess.

I do really appreciate how quickly you turned around my concern. I did however, not get an answer to my original question on this post. Is it ok to power up an ESC with no motor attached to act as load? I suspect the answer is yet, but confirmation would be good

Thanks
TimV
Edited for spelling

There is not problem to connect power to the ESC’s without a motor attached.
They will heat a bit since the internal regulator (BEC 5V) will be powered so no worry there.

Thanks for confirming this for me. I feel better knowing.
