This is a couple of days old already but it hasn’t been posted here so, have you guys heard about this? The link has a video that is really worth a watch. I wish I could make one of those for myself!
It seems technology is catching up with fiction. The only thing missing is an artificial, lightweight skin to make it look and “feel” similar to that of Will Smith’s artificial arm in iRobot. The “Luke” arm is almost at the level of RobotCop the television series. The three main difficulties seem to be:
- small, lightweight but high torque motors
- power supply that provides power for an entire day (but lightweight)
- finding and using muscle signals within the “stub” to control all functions (including each degree of freedom of a virtual hand).
However, there are enough artificial arms out there to note that these challenges can be overcome and improved upon.
