Looking for help and knowledge on lidar

I am currently a part of a Research Project that is working with LiDAR imaging on large animals such as bison. The goal is to use these LiDAR cameras/sensors to capture an ‘image’ of the animal as it is walking by… from here these images will be used to estimate the size and weights of the animal.

What is out there for LiDAR options that would work for this application?? Any input would be amazing, Thanks in advance!

Hello @walkerbalan and welcome to the RobotShop forum,

Interesting project!

I’m guessing that with “image” you are referring to a point cloud, is that correct? If that’s the case then you should look for a LIDAR that covers the range needed for this application and with a wide enough FOV, perhaps a rotational LIDAR. However, as the animals are in motion it might be tricky to get a good estimate. Also as I’m guessing the scenario would be outdoors you should check if the LIDAR is susceptible to sunlight as this may affect measurements.

However, as you mention that the goal is to estimate the size and weight of the animals, perhaps a stereo/3D camera could be more suited for this application.

I hope this information can help you!

I am also interested to know more about this. It’s really good for my future project Lil peep apparel.
