Looking for bin sensor

I’m planning a bin project, essentially before anything can be placed in a bin, it has to be scanned. Any suggestions on a sensor that can be placed inside the bin that will ensure that the scanned item has been placed and bin and nothing other than the scanned item has been placed in the bin.

Is it necessary to detect the type of item? or just the quantity? A good option would be a vision sensor (camera module) + a single board computer and use some object detection algorithm.

thanks for the response, it just needs to detect the quantity, more environment sensing than machine vision.

Could you give an example? So I can have a visual image of what you want to achieve?

At the moment, I can’t think of any way to detect that multiple objects are being thrown other than with computer vision
