Linux on Virtual PC?

I have just recently downloaded and installed VPC 2007
but is it possible to run linux on it?

No. The virtual PCs this talks about mean virtual PCs running previous versions of Windows, not other operating systems such as Linux.

If you want to run Linux, do yourself a favor and run it from a Knoppix CD (does not require installing to the hard drive), or for best performance, install it on its own partitions on the hard drive.

Thats what I’ve done allready, actuall i have three HDD’s and two are connected to a RAID controller and is used for windows, and the other one is for linux.

it would just be nice to get to use both at the same time.

Where can i find Knoppix at?

Google is your friend.

If I’m running Windows, I tend to install CygWin. It isn’t even close to a perfect solution, but does at least some of what I need (gcc, grep, etc). Your mileage will vary.

Live CDs are great - there are a ton of good ones out there, Knoppix, Debian and their derivatives are excellent. I’m pretty sure there’s a live cd of Ubuntu/Kubuntu available as well, which is a pretty good distro to get your feet wet with.

If you’re set on running environments on the same PC at the same time, you’re really looking at virtual machines.

VMWare has a free version of their virtual pc software, you might also be able to find some distros bundled up as VMX images for that.

SuSE is one that I know is available developer.kde.org/~binner/vmware/

Parallels also has great virtual machine software inexpensively. There are also linux images available for it.

There is also Bochs, which is excellent, but a little slow.

Ubuntu install discs are live. Boot it, it loads a full gui, if you like it hit an install icon.

i took a look at the knoppix, and it dosn’t look quite as good as ubuntu or mandriva, one thing i hate about mandriva is it sometimes dosn’t boot properly e.g KDE 3.5 crashes or something like that.

what one is better?

I find that largely depends on your tastes - and your system.

I’ve had laptops that wouldn’t run Fedora but would run Debian. I’ve had laptops that would run Debian and not Fedora. And all sorts of other combinations with other distributions. Raid throws some distributions for a loop.

If you’re fairly new to Linux and are familiar with Windows, KDE is probably an easier interface to pick up than Gnome. I tend to run KDE as I prefer KDevelop over Anjunta.

I find the package management good in Fedora, SuSE and Kubuntu (KDE version of Ubuntu). I’m running Fedora and SuSE at the moment, but would be just as happy running Kubuntu.

If you’re just getting started, Kubuntu is probably the friendliest of the three I’ve mentioned.

Which one is better is a bit like asking what’s the best robot controller. I don’t think anyone can answer it for you.

I am Currently using Ubuntu,i may try Kubuntu soon, but i think my favorite is Ubuntu right now.
