LinkSprite PCB UHF RFID Antenna

Hi,

I just bought Linksprite PCB UHF RFID antenna and the connector on my RFID is u.FL male connector and the antenna have MMCX male. I was planning to remove the soldered MMCX cable from the board and solder U.FL cable assembly. My question is will it affect the communication if I remove the cable from the antenna board and solder U.FL cable connector? What is the range for the antenna?

Thanks,

Hi Dagmawi,

Here are answers to your questions/comments:

We recommend not to remove any part of the cable and instead use an adapter. This should reduce possibilities of adding noise or other issues to your signal. You can find some here, such as this.

Antennas do not have range characteristics. What you can get from an antenna is how much it amplifies the signal and in what way / shape. Each antenna is made for a specific propagation at a specific range of frequencies, thus they can product a different range at different frequencies and certainly in different directions from the antenna, as the radiation pattern is often not perfectly symmetrical. An extreme case of this is a direction antenna, which will have a strong signal in one direction and a weaker one in another.

The actual range of the entire system can be estimated by accounting for the power of the transmitter, the boost the transmitting antenna provides, the receiving antenna characteristics, the sensitivity of the receiver, the interference (constructive and destructive), noise and path loss of the signal during travel and many other factors, such as line of sight, electrical ground, frequency used, current weather, etc.

We recommend that you do some more reading concerning RF and antennas. There are many good references online (check amateur radio sites) and also plenty of good books on RF.

Sincerely,
