Lidar Sensor Advice

I’m a novice in the lidar world so I’m looking for some advice on the right lidar sensor to buy for our application. We have an Emriver stream table (https://emriver.com/models/em4/) that’s about 12’ long x 4’ wide that we want to collect 3d lidar points of as we run water flow simulations. The sensor would be mounted above the table in a fixed location. The outputs should be a 3d point cloud which we can translate into our hydrology software via ArcGIS or the like. It would be great if the sensor could penetrate shallow clear water as well since we’d like to record the data during water flow simulations. Might anyone recommend a reasonably priced lidar sensor(s) that would fit our needs? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,
Keith

Hello @kvand and welcome to our forum!

You have a nice and interesting project.

I would suggest you have a look at Slamtec lidars that we sell: Slamtec - RobotShop

They have a good price/quality ratio and we sell these a lot.

But, I don’t think these can scan through the water. Terrestrial laser scanning does not penetrate into water generally. The light emitted from the scanner can actually penetrate, but getting a return signal is the problem, as Reflection and refraction plays a big part in confusing things.

Anyway, here is a sample file that you can get from RPLIDAR A3 360°.
dump data-A3.txt (16.6 KB)
See if you can use it in your software.
