LED sensor

Hi All,

I’m new to robotics and I’m trying my first project.
I have 5 leds closely spaced and I’d like to sense which leds are on and which are off. Some are red leds and some are green.
Can anyone give me some idea on what kind of sensor to use? Should I just use a Precision Light Sensor, or is there something smaller and better that I can use?

Thanks!

Hi Coleman,

Thanks for your response.

The LEDs I would like to sense are behind plastic and I’d like to sense them only from the led so the current sensors are not applicable.
I was thinking of the Phidgets Precision Light Sensor, but I cannot find any details on its actual size. Any ideas where I can find those details?

Mike

Hi mcfly04,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum. Instead of sensing the light emitted, can you sense a current? That method would be foolproof. The other appraoch as you indicate would be to use an infrared receiver / light sensor (one per LED) and test the best configuration.

Hope this helps,

Hi Mike,

It sounds like you will have to test a variety of sensors since your setup includes an “obstruction”. Can you provide an image of the setup?

Sincerely,
