Laser Engraving Etching Info

Hi All,

Again i need your help !
I am looking for a “Laser” to mount on the CNC to engrave on wood or plastic.
Do anyone have ever look at that ?

Tanks a lot

I think they more likely mount the laser solidly, an use mirrors and lenses on the carriage to direct the beam.

If you find one you can carriage mount, tell me!

I have ask an Asian seller on eBay and he have send me that link

Might be useful. 1.6W might not be able to do much. If you like to hack, the laser diode out of a CD writer, or a laser printer can be used. the laser diodes typically have to be driven with a custom driver circuit.

I have open a computer cd writer this weekend. Look like the diode can be use. I don’t know how to power it… :frowning:
People say that a DVD one is more powerfull. But would like to try the one i have…

Yes i like hacking… lol

Any idea how i can power it… i think it’s a continious current driver that’s needed.

BTW… look…cgi.ebay.com/Focusable-4-0W-808nm-810nm-Infrared-Laser-Diode-Module-/120618851945?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c15719e69

Yeah, that’s starting to have a little power.

Google for laser diodes, there are driver chips and circuits out there. I was going to use a diode to expose film, but the frequency/power wasn’t what I needed.

Just not sure of what’s needed for the one i have… :frowning:

45w to 60w then you can cut some plastics.

LOL… and a whole lot of Money…!!

That’s what I was thinking. And a whole lot bigger!

I have also found that kit

dealextreme.com/p/100mw-650nm-red-35mw-532nm-green-laser-module-12v-46394

Wich i think i will order. What do you think… ?

Doesn’t look like we (US) can get 100mW anymore…

Alan KM6VV

Yes…
Since there is no limitation over Canada. If you are interested i can send you from here… lol

Hey Guys,
I know this is an old old post and all, but thought I might chime in for future reference. More than likely there isn’t a simple attachment for your router, I’ve personally never heard of any and lasers are my forte` (I’m a laser specialist for the DoD…sometimes). What you essentially would need is a “laser engraver”. There are many vendors/brands out there but arguably Epilog Laser is the best. Attaching a high powered laser simply would be 1) Dangerous if not enclosed 2) Be only used to cut/burn, not so much engrave without proper laser setup.
Most engravers/cutters are Co2 lasers that use a “flying optics” setup in order to do the work. I can’t say I’ve ever seen a diode setup used for actual engraving. I would suspect not only would it be extremely hard to find, as there isn’t many 20w laser diodes out there, but extremely expensive as well. The laser you pull out of your “blu-ray” players and dvd players will “burn” surfaces but that’s probably about it, as they’re not too powerful (i.e. 1.6w isn’t going to do a whole lot in the world of cutting acrylic/wood/plastics and even if it did it’ll take you days to cut through). Metal is also out of the question unless you’re using a certain setup like a Galvo laser or fiber laser, in either case very expensive machines.
One reason I came into this forum is that I have a strong interest in robotics and I’m getting a 75watt Epilog laser engraver soon and hope to do work for you among other enthusiasts. The working area will be 24x18x8 and I’ll be able to remove the front in order to “poke” a larger piece inside for engraving. I’ll be posting a “new member” post here soon giving more details and if you ever want to know more feel free to contact me, I’d love to help  Hope this clears some things up for you guys.

Woot Woot …!

Yes, what Eric said!

Above “deal” link is invalid now. Wouldn’t mind getting something from Canada…
