Larger Chassis Options

Are there any plans to make a larger chassis option then the A4WD1?

8" square is just a little to small to fit the larger wheels (i.e. 6.75").

It would be nice if there was a larger variant.

No concrete plans right now. I’ve got a lot of things in the works, but that’s not on the list. :frowning:

Why not DIY? Lyxnmotion sells sheets of polycarbonate/lexan for a reasonable price.

or you could also use derlin (spelling?), I’ve heard from the folks that use this stuff that its pretty good, easy to use, and machines like aluminum 8)

delrin, close

I plan to do it myself for the final version, but I’m planning an intermediate step and for this I’m looking for an off the shelf chassis.

I could probably live with the 4.75" wheels, but one problem I have got is that Mini-ITX boards once housed in a chassis of their own (looks better then a load of loose wires and is more resilient to outside world environments) won’t fit on the lynx motion chassis 0.4" to small - the smallest mountable case I’ve found to date is 7.4 inches x 7.67 inches.

Making it just a touch to narrow.

…Yes I could use a Nano or Pico ITX board, but two issues with this are that I already have a Mini-ITX board available and more importantly they don’t make Nano boards with as much processing punch as the Mini-ITX ones yet.

Not really looking for a rapid solution or anything, just flagging an observation so that when Lynxmotion thinks about “what could we change/do next” they might just think about offering a slightly wider and preferably slightly longer version.

I measured the actual distance between the tires and it’s 7.75". The length from bent edge to bent edge chassis components is 8.00".

I do have plans to enlarge the chassis, but it will be a long time as we have a large stock of this design. Another option would be to lift the enclosure up about 1.25" it would clear the tires completely. Well anyway just some ideas.

Now that is interesting.

Don’t suppose you have any dimension drawings for the chassis and decks respectively as this would help to just be sure it’s going to work before committing (I’ve not entirely convinced myself I want to do an intermediate design, but if I could be sure it’d all fit and be a good working prototype [and by prototype I don’t mean wires hanging everywhere]).

Good point about raising it off the deck by just 1.25" and getting the sidways clearance this way. When I’d thought about adding decks I had thought of higher clearances and really didn’t want the thing to get to tall.

Finally, while we’re talking dimensions, would the 5" wheels work with this rover? (again dimension drawing so you know how far in the motor mounting holes are would help me here) -obviously this would effect the above clearance issue but it was just something I was wondering last night - the more ground clearance I can get the better etc.

I don’t have 3D models, nor do I have all of the parts dimensioned. Some of the parts are drawn then used directly to manufacture. Not a standard CAD format.

The Add on decks come with 1.5" standoffs, and the overall dims are 8.75" x 11.75".

If you’re referring to the TRC-02 tires, the 5" diameter theoretically will only give you an additional 1/8" of ground clearance. But the truth is those tires are so much softer than the ones included with the kit, that you would probably loose some ground clearance by installing them. lol
