I am having trouble getting my Hagisonic StarGazer Navigation System to work. If anyone has been able to use the StarGazer system successfully, please reply to this post. You can reply either directly within this thread, or by sending me a private message to “Dexter”. See the items at the top of the page to send a private message.
I finally solved the problem of how to connect the StarGazer module to my laptop! I found out from another StarGazer user that the only way to get the StarGazer to communicate with a computer is to use a pure serial to serial connection. The computer/laptop has to have a built-in serial port. Using a serial-to-serial cable, hook the StarGazer module’s serial port to the computer’s built-in serial port. The computer/laptop then receives data from the StarGazer. It took me 10 months to figure this out, but now I can finally start using the StarGazer. I had to go out and buy an old laptop that had a built-in serial port. That old laptop uses Windows XP, but the StarGazer Monitor runs well on it, after a few screen resolution changes are made.
When I place the Stargazer under the Reference ID Landmark (0,0), the proper Landmark ID doesn’t show up in the Stargazer Monitor program field. The value in the Landmark ID field won’t stick on the Landmark above it (which, in this case, happens to be “2”). The number keeps changing to different ID numbers. Has anyone out there had this problem and solved it? I don’t know whether the Stargazer is defective, or whether I am not using it correctly. I emailed Hagisonic last month, but haven’t received a response yet.
Problem solved! I simply moved the Landmarks farther apart! The StarGazer Monitor program then worked well. As far as I can tell, the Landmarks have to be a minimum of 56 inches apart for the StarGazer to distinguish between them.
Happy to hear you were able to resolve the issue! The camera should only be able to see one landmark at a time, and the distance apart is also a function of the landmark’s size and height of the ceiling.
In this case since you are already in communication with returns / exchanges, it is best not to proceed here. The reply we received was on May 8th since they had a long holiday. I will send you a private message with our contact’s e-mail. Since I was not aware of the CDs, it is best to contact Julie.
Hagisonic is based in South Korea, and although there is a good chance that the person who picks up the phone will not speak English, a very high % of the Korean population does in fact speak English. 82-42-936-7740
We currently don’t have the Hagisonic set up here and it’s not a service we offer (given the amount of troubleshooting and support we provide each day it’s simply not possible to reproduce customer issues). We thank you for your understanding in this regard. Keep us posted.
Sorry for the late reply—I haven’t been working on my robot or checking this Forum for the last few days.
I have not heard from Hagisonic recently (since ~May 1st?). They did send me a new CD of software for the StarGazer Monitor program, but it did not work. I have been emailing Julie (from Robotshop) in the past month–she asked Hagisonic to send me the new CD, and it did arrive a week or two ago. I tried the CD out on my computer, but I still did not get data to be read into the StarGazer Monitor program.
One question I do have is: Why did Hagisonic send me 5 CDs? They all have the same version number on them:
“Ver. 7.0_201210” I only installed 1 of the CDs. Does Hagisonic want me to try each of the 5 CDs? (That would mean unistalling and reinstalling 5 times…?) Is each CD a different version of the Monitor program?
In the quote from Hagisonic they said “There was no mention about the faulty sensors.” That is correct. To the best of my knowledge my sensors (the hardware/metallic cube) is working correctly. I ran a Hyper Terminal test on the sensors, and it was showing navigation data flowing into the port on my computer. I am just having troubling getting the Monitor program to read the data coming into the computer’s port.
Let me know if you need clarification on any of this.
Thank you. What I would like to do is talk on the phone with someone who has the StarGazer up and running on their computer in front of them. I could then tell them what my computer screen says, and compare notes. I've tried just about every other way of troubleshooting this system.
Thanks,
Dexter
Thank you for that phone number. Is that Sean Kim’s direct number? Should I ask for him when I call that number? I realize they are 11 or 12 hours ahead of the Eastern US.
