My Roomba charges and when turning it on it goes an inch or two and says it needs to be charged. Any idea what the problem might be?

Have you replaced the battery since the purchase of the robot?
Usually, batteries can last up to 1 to 2 years with proper care. It seems the problem you are experiencing is caused by a low capacity battery.

I haven’t replaced the battery since I got it a year ago. The battery life of Irobot Roomba Pet Series 500 easily runs 45 mins - 1.5 hours on a charge. Both will need a bin emptying either half way through cycle (roomba) or when it gets back to the base to recharge.
