anyone interested in starting an irc channel for lynxmotion?
Ive ran this by Robot Dude seemed to be a bit overwhelming of a topic at the time, although this cost’s nothing and virtually needs little to zero upkeep, and might be a quicker way for people to shoot the ish or simply exchange ideas rather then post it on a forum.
I personally have been using irc for the past 10 years for various chat rooms and has been fantastic.
I have an idea for a network that’s UICN network, this is mainly a hacking network although not all the rooms are used for that, although the moderators who take care of bad users and mainly taking care of channel registration to make sure no one will ever take over your channel is well taken care of
I personally wouldn’t mind it and I would be in there all the time… I guess the main thing is its free and why not? and would really require zero maintenance.
As for which irc network to use, UICN would be easy, but there are many others to choose from.
what do you think we would gain from this, that we cannot get from LM.net
Most IRC servers do not require users to log in, but a user will have to set a nickname before being connected so this is a good but i feel unsafe feature! plus i already have automatic log in here, as im sure most people have.
i did think of starting my own forum or irc channel but i realised that all the information we are looking for is already here. the community is friendly and helpfull.
ill give you my vote, just to see how this works out… think id rather stick to this tho!
Yeah I guess kinda more of B$ grounds, some other form of chat, with a lot of these irc networks you can register a nick and its tied to an email address so no one can take it, I would imagine people would use there forum nics on the irc room so people can recognize the other people quickly.
Personally,
I think if you chose the correct IRC network such as freenode which is established, well maintained and particularly aimed towards projects such as this it could provide a few essentials the forums lack.
The first point being that it’s definitely a source of free advertisement.
An idle channel is the #1 advertisement source for most web/shell hosting companies.
IRC has become secure and like previously mentioned you do register your nickname.
Personally if Lynxmotion was to start a channel I could provide channel bots to maintain the channel which completely reduces the the need for moderators and maintainability to null.
An IRC channel offers more a community feel in the sense that the regular Lynxmotion customers could get to know each other.
However, It might be more practical to keep it unofficial because it’s a new type of customer service.
The problem with chat is that everyone has to allocate time to meet at the same time. With the forums, you can come and go any time of the day and the info is searchable. Another benefit of the forums is that you can take the time to think about what you want to say so that it makes sense.
Chat can be useful but I’m not sure how it would work out.
