Can anyone tell me where the instructions for use are for the controller software for the UBTECH’s Alpha 1S are to be found? I’ve downloaded the software successfully but don’t know how to interface with the bot.

Do you mean the software (direct link here) available on the product page under Useful Links? It seems the Alpha 1S has two communication interface:
]USB port at the back of the robot/:m]
]Bluetooth 3.0/4.0 BLE+EDR/:m]From what we can see, the software also installs custom USB drivers, so you most likely should try and connect the robot by USB to your computer, first. Then, try and connect in the app (see image below).
