I’m new to the RobotShop parts line. I purchased some components (Phidgets stepper controller, bipolar stepper motor and power supplies) and I simply just wanted to get them up and running together but I did not get enough documentation to direct me to this ‘how to’ process. It showed in the catalog that there was a USB interface so I figured that there would be some sort of boot-up interface that would direct me to the programing GUI, of sorts. Is this device intended to I/F with a laptop or must it I/F with a programmed micro controller of sorts? I tried to scan you web site for beginner startup info on how to get up and running with these products but I obviously missed out somewhere here. The controller data sheet speaks to (2) voltages needed but does not specify what voltage the board electronics required. I connected this controller to my laptop and I got a notification of connection ‘beep’ but that was it … no further instructions offered … ? My apologies for asking what must seem like ‘duh’ kinds of questions but I’m new to these products, and I think their very neat and useful for all kinds of projects. Any help you could give me to get me started would be greatly appreciated. Thank-you very much.
Hi,
Since you are using the RB-Phi-179 (PhidgetStepper Bipolar Stepper Motor Controller), you can find (most of?) the information you need on the product page under Useful Links. The electronics are powered by the USB port connection, which is also required to control the device. The motor itself will be powered by the external power supply you purchased.
As you can see in the datasheet (page 2), this board supports an external voltage of 10-30 V DC.
You can also find there the sample code (for most platforms!) that will guide use in using this product.
You may want to take a look at the user guide from the manufacturer. You can find it here.
Sincerely,
Thank-you VERY much for your time and information (especially the links). I now have a much clearer picture. Take care, Jay.
