Information about Mecanum Wheels in 4WD 100mm Mecanum wheel robot kit 10011

I would like to tell you that this is on behalf of Valeo Switches and Sensors Gmbh,Germany. we are interested in one of your products ‘4WD 100mm Mecanum wheel robot kit 10011’ for our mobile robot application. For this there are certain requirements which need to be fulfilled . The requirements need Tolerance information about the Mecanum wheels , as well as any other kinematics and mechanics related information. This is because we want our robot to carry a load <10 kg with great precision (in mm range) and most important issue is roller and wheel tolerances for precise and stable motion . I would like you to provide all certified documents regarding the wheel tolerances .

Hi Coleman,

Your information was useful.thanks for that. I will be waiting for the reply from the wheel manufacturers . I understand that there will be tolerances in assembly of rollers and the construction .I am still doubtful if an encoder can help this situation. For example if we assume we have 1 inch play due to the rollers or any other part of wheel’s tolerance ,can we remove this play due to mechanical tolerance by using a 0.1 inch resolution wheel encoder along with a reference sensor ?

Thanks for nice post…!

Hello friend thanks for very nice information here…!

Hi kunal,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum. It is rare that Mecanum wheels are used for very precise motion, and it is doubtful you will be able to achieve mm accuracy with these wheels. The tolerances involved in their construction related to the machining of the metal and the assembly. There is some play in the rollers when assembled. In order to obtain maximum accuracy from these wheels, we suggest using an encoder mounted to each motor, and a secondary reference sensor. We have contacted the manufacturer of the 100mm Mecanum Wheel Set (2x Left, 2x Right) to get their input and will add to this thread once we receive a reply.

Hope this helps,

Hi,

An encoder would only be part of the solution and allow you to more precisely move the wheels, knowing the robot’s actual position (relative to its environment or desired position) using another sensor . This can be in the form of a laser rangefinder or high quality IR sensor.

Sincerely,
