I need help building a meduim size robot (I am a beginner )

Hi, I am a beginner in robot building, I wish to start by building a medium sized robot, I am on a $1000 budget for just the bot.

I need advice on how to approach this task and most importantly I need to know where to get suitably sized components for this project, components like gear , wheels, medium sized high torque motors , rightly rated batteries ,power distribution boards and speed controllers for the motors .

I will like to use a 14inch all terrain compatible tire , also with high torgue motors to suit the system.
I have some background knowledge in electronics and mechanics as I am a computer engineer , what else do I need ?

Another good way to start would be to build a kit.
