Not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I cannot understand how the HUB-15 can also be used to give a 45° offset between brackets?

Instead of there being just four holes, there are 8. You would connect one bracket to four of the holes, and the other bracket (to the other side) using the four 45-degree offset holes.
