How to prototype a new motor

Hi everyone,

I’m currently wanting to create a new kind of motor and thus have to buy/do some small electromagnet.

My biggest question without even a shade of an answer is : where can I find a bare electromagnet ? I mean only the heart (the inside, like soft iron, I dunno if “heart” is the english way to address that ?) and the copper wire ?

I tried several time to find somewhere to buy those things, but never found anything close.

So the other idea is how to make one. I have the feeling that finding copper wire isn’t much of a problem, but where can I find something to be the “heart” ? I mean, a simple soft iron bar might suffice.

I would like it to be small, like 5mm diameter or so and same in length.

I once have seen a Parrot drone have its motors done with many small electromagnet like the one i imagine. But as it’s only a part of 1 of the motor, I don’t know how to buy, where to buy, etc.

You can take a look at a few videos on YouTube that shows how do build DC motors, which would help you to identify and verify the parts you will need:

You can verify online for electromagnets, you will likely need to custom these yourself.
