A homie of mine asked me if I would look into the prospect of making records via laser cutter. Put simply, he wants to take an existing record, put it on a lathe, skim off the existing grooves, then proceed to "re-groove" via the output of a MP3 and some kinda mechanical device with a "cutter" of some kind...
My first thought was a couple of electro magnets causing a perminate magnet (connected to the cutter) to shake back and forth. My second though was actually using the laser cutter --again, with some kinda high-speed mechanism to "shake" the cutter back and forth --but again, probably through magnets...
This is a very open question: Does anyone have any thoughts on trying to "burn" (engrave) a record from scratch?
