Horizontal motor running vertically?

I am extremely new to robotics. I’m a glass artist and building an orrery with motor driven planet arms. The motors I got are:
Gear Head Motor - 7.2vdc 50:1 175rpm (6mm shaft)
that I can attach an encoder to to regulate where the planets are.

I got the gearing set up, but it needs a vertical motor and I just saw on the specs that these motors should be run horizontally. Will they run vertically? Not as well? Not at all?

Thank you,
Joy

That’s strange! Where did you read that?

I can’t see where it would be a problem. These are brushed motors. Axial loading of the bearings?

I’d feel comfortable running them in any position!

How much weight will the vertical motor have to support?

It said it in the specs sheet - “Motor Orientation: Horizontal”
There is hardly any load on these at all. The planets and arms don’t weigh anything and the motors will just be barely spinning them around.

Should be ok then?

Peace,
Joy

OK, I see that now. Never noticed it before. I have four similar motors running in robots. I don’t see a rating for axial shaft loading (normally wouldn’t on a small DC motor) I see no reason why you shouldn’t be fine with your light load.

My recommendation would be not to worry about it!

Sounds good to me!!! Thank you!!
