Hi Guys,

I have purchased RPLidar A1M8. When I am trying to connect on my laptop, the device is getting powered on but the USB port is not detecting in the computer, hence I am not able to fetch point cloud data. I have installed SDK which is available on the site. Please help me to set up the Lidar.

Hi @86sanj,

Which operating system are you using?

Try to install SDK again, but connect USB after installation is done.

I have used in window 10 as well as mac and faced same problem in both OS. Also, in windows I am not getting COM&LPT option under device manager. Is this normal or do I need to enable this before installing SDK?

@86sanj Have you maybe tried to manually install the drivers?

Yes, I have installed the drivers manually in both window and Mac.

Hi @86sanj,

Welcome to the RobotSHop community!

Here are a few ideas to check:

  1. The A1M8 requires up-to 600 mA (typical 500 mA) of current at startup @ 5 V DC (with maximum ripple of ±20 mV, absolute max ±50 mV). As you can read in the manual (page 10), if this requirement is not met at startup it may cause the system to not initialize properly (and therefore not work / respond / etc.).
You may already be aware of this but often laptops have lower power availability on the internal USB hubs and most cannot provide more than 500 mA (USB 2.0 standards) and a few can’t even do that properly, especially if other things are using the USB ports.
Therefore, can you try it on a device that can provide enough power? Usually a recent desktop USB port may be enough.

  2. With the stuff above in mind if your A1M8 adapter board does not respond it may be that it is defective or damaged. Did you happen to cause any static discharge on the board? It should be noted that this dev kit for the RPLidar does not have any significant ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection and therefore can be easily damaged by manipulation in environments where ESD is possible (human clothing/chair interactions, carpets, etc.).

(2) seems to be more likely the issue in this case but it is worth checking out (1), too.

Sincerely,

Hi Scharette,

Thank you for the detailed response!

I will try the 1st option today. As far as the adapter board damages are concern, I am handling the device very carefully since day 1. Actually, I am using this to do research in my office. I have placed the device either on my desk or desk cupboard, so there was no interaction of other materials with the board.

In case of defective, whats the process of return and get working device?

Best,
Sanjay

Thanks for this information. It is useful

Hi @86sanj,

If it is defective, we will transfer this conversation to our internal support. You would receive additional instructions after that.

Hi Scharette,

I have tested the device on desktop with both USB 2 and USB 3 ports but still only device spins and not getting USB port. Please do the needful to get replacement of the device.

Thanks,
Sanjay
