I’m trying to surprise my husband and teenage son with the supplies to build their first battle bot. I don’t know where to start other then buying a kit. I would like to spend under $300 and get pieces that they can add onto as they learn more. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you
Hello @Hipchick76 and welcome to the forum!
I recommend checking out the following sections:
If they don’t have much experience with programming I suggest getting an Arduino compatible kit, for example, this one:
And if you add a bluetooth module they can do something like this:
Other great options are the Lynxmotion Rovers, for example, these ones:

Or the FingerTech ‘Viper’ Combat Robot Kit that offers lots of different add-ons.
I hope this information can help you out!
Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate you taking the time to respond and for all of your information. I was looking at this kit, the
Devastator Tank Mobile Robot Platform (Metal DC Gear Motor)
https://www.dfrobot.com/product-1477.html
But I wasn’t sure what controller or add ons I should buy with it. I was thinking the Romeo all in one controller. Do you like the Rover2 better then the Devastator? Do you mind suggesting any ad ons for whichever one you prefer? He would like to do the coding and controlling from his iPhone or iPad if possible. His computer is having an issue right now. Thank you again. I really appreciate it.
I’m not sure which weight class that they may want to fight in, or if they want all wheel drive, 2 wheel drive or a tracked system, but the tracks on the DFRobotShop Rover V2 are made out of plastic and will have no grip. I’ve used these tracks on a few different projects and I was not impressed.
This is a pretty solid platform to start with if 4 wheel drive is wanted:
Fingertech also makes pretty good kits:
The Fingertech Viper platform is sold on Robot Shop:
