Heli Simulation with HEXAPOD?

I had a crazy idea. What if the physics of a helicopter were to be incorporated into the controls of a hexapod?

We’re already using a twin-joystick control (PS2 or R/C transmitter). To fly an R/C heli (collective pitch, single rotor), we (US) use the left stick for collective and yaw, and the right stick for cyclic.

For our hexapods, we can translate (move in any XY direction), and/or rotate. Similar? Yes, to an extent. (accurate?)

What if we had the exact same controls (collective, cyclic and yaw) of a heli? Add to that the interactions (physics). Maybe pitch and roll the 'bot accordingly.

Sound interesting?

What are the quadcopter controls like?

Good idea
Of course… i am not programmer… lol

thanks, I’ll take a look.

Getting really interested in 450 sized heli.

Alan KM6VV

Heli or Quad…:stuck_out_tongue:

Heli.

There’s just something about flying with cyclic and collective controls… Probably something I got from my dad while he was alive. He’d LOVE this!

Like I need another hobby! See what you’ve done!

Alan KM6VV

I have a t-rex 450 a 500 and a sjm 430 and a quick of japan and a gaui … lol

So you DO have a heli! You’ve been holding out on me!

I found a TRAX 450 on ebay. Also found a clone on HobbyKing. Still doing my do-diligence.

What do you think of the 450? Clones? Any advice?

Alan KM6VV

If you really want to get into Heli…
I would suggest getting a gigger than 450 size.

500 size are much more stable and easier to learn

There is a lot involve…
What would be your price range… do you have a transmitter ?

I thought the 450 was my price range… LOL

Is the 500 that much different? I still need to learn to hover!

I’m thinking of buying the Phoenix Sim. What do you think?

One could go really cheap, and get a Hobby King 450 for about $130. $3 servos? I’m not so sure that’s a good idea to learn with, is the quality there?

I did join RCHeliSpot, some discussions on 450 and clones.

Alan KM6VV
(I’ve already got my tail numbers!)

Don’t buy a HK 450…

I build 3 of them and they are real poor quality.
You will hurt yourself… That’s spinning fast.

In the other hand the 500 is much more strong

Do you have a transmitter that ca do Heli ?

I’ll start looking at the HK500. That’s TWICE AS BIG!

Can I still learn on it as a 1st heli? Sim work should help. I do know the physics of flight and how the controls work, and I’ve flown a little… ;>)

My brand new (Christmas) Futaba T7C should fill the bill. Sounds like I’ll need to setup curves for pitch and throttle on it. Also set the pitch of the blades, and align a bunch of stuff.

I might already be getting the Align TREX 450, Wife’s been mum about the E-bay link I sent her. Usually a good sign.

Alan KM6VV

It is not twice as big…
450 heli have 325mm blade
500 heli have 425mm blade

I don’t like the sim… but that’s me…

The 500 will be easier to fly.
Less nervous since bigger.

You’re right, I probably read it wrong on a quick comparison. Dia of one vs Blade of the other.

500Main rotor diameter: 970mm
Main Rotor Diameter:700mm

So did you learn on the 500? I don’t want to spend time un-learning a coaxial. And I’d really like to go flybarr-less, but that ups the ante.

I get it that bigger birds are easier to fly. But, the bigger they are, the harder they fall?

Alan

No…
A 250 size heli hiting the ground will self destruct like a 500 …

Basicly… the advantage of a 450 is price of parts - batteri etc… smaller … cheaper.

Don’t forget to budget for replacement parts. You will crash, and it will break, many times…

I have crash many time…
Only break one “Frame” to date.

50’ motor cut… at night… with LED on it… Beautiful crash…

For Heli… then…
Many crash… each $$

Yeah, that’s a new facet to a model hobby, CRASHES! Hard to get through my head that I’ll no doubt crash it a few (many?) times…

That’s what I didn’t like about the robot competitions…

I’m hoping a Heli SIM will get me past at least a little of that. And training aids.

HA! Wife is planning when order of Align TREX! (had some big bills with my mom dying a few weeks ago)
But a bonus from work came in.

Jim, what are flying? (missed your PM).

I would suggest Used:

Thanks for the URLs, I’ve been reading on a couple of lists.

I even recognize these groups!

The “for sale” forum might come in handy!

I have buy my T-Rex 500 ESP kit there.
Almost a steal… it was brand new in the box never open…

Align kit are good cause your sure you have everything and they are made to work.
Servo are good for the heli… motor too… etc…
