Has anyone here attended or worked on a large-scale drone light show recently?

I was part of a mid-sized drone show earlier this year, and honestly, the amount of preparation surprised me. The biggest factor is planning. From getting permissions to running multiple rehearsals in controlled environments.

On the technical side, the “brain” of every drone is its flight controller. A reliable FC makes all the difference because it stabilizes the drone, keeps GPS data accurate, and ensures synchronized maneuvers. For example, I’ve seen setups where teams used controllers like the BotWing F722 Flight Controller, which handled complex choreographies really smoothly.

Safety is another big one we had geofencing enabled to prevent strays, plus a backup protocol where drones would auto-land safely if they lost connection. Signal interference was less of an issue since we operated in a dedicated frequency band, but we still ran multiple interference checks before going live.

In short, while the glowing visuals get all the attention, it’s really the invisible systems hardware, software, and human coordination that make the show possible.

Absolutely a lot of preparation and testing. However well worth it an a lot more environmentally friendly than fireworks (and potentially fewer safety risks)

Totally agree with you the environmental side is such a huge win. Fireworks leave behind smoke and debris, but with drones you mostly just have to worry about battery management and airspace clearance.

I also feel like the safety factor is underrated. With the right protocols in place, risks can be minimized so much more compared to pyrotechnics.

Have you noticed any shows yet where they combine fireworks and drones? I’ve seen a couple of those hybrid displays and it feels like the best of both worlds.

Oddly enough I was listening to the podcast “Everything is Public Health” this weekend and their latest episode (dated Wednesday Sept 10) is specifically titled “Air is public health - Fireworks are Not Good” and they go into more details, and even talk about drone shows.
