GHM-04, QME-01 question

Is the GHM-04 the only motor/gearbox sold by Lynxmotion that will accept the QME-01 encoder?

I would much prefer to have the option to use this with one of the planetary motor/gearbox sets like the PGHM-19. Is this workable?

The GHM-04 is the only one with the external motor shaft. Sorry…

…but the spur gearheads are replaceable, right?

So if a given project is workable with the GHM-03, with the 30:1 gearhead, but you want the encoder output of the GHM-04, one could conceivably buy a GHM-04 and a GHM-03, swap the GHM-04’s 50:1 head for the GHM-03’s 30:1 head, and end up with a 291 RPM motor with optical encoder, correct?

No idea if this is applicable to any particular project in question - just tossing it out there as an idea.

Yes it’s possible. The GHM-03 and GHM-04 motors have a plastic bottom and the factory drills it for the motor shaft to extend out for the encoder. The motors used in the PGHM-01, and 2 have a metal bottom and they say the extended motor shaft can’t be used with it.

Could you not mount an encoder onto the inside of the wheel or hub? It’s not as fancy as the plastic covered one but it will work and is barely visible.

Yea, a Parallax or Nubotics style optical encoder would work on just about any motor you could attach to a suitable wheel with alternating black and white pattern. However, neither have the precision of the QME-01.

My thoughts exactly.

My entire design approach to this project is bassackwards for me anyway so I sort of bought off on the buy it and try it approach. I needed some hardware to get a feel for how much weight and torque it’ll take to push things around with so I bought these. With any luck it’ll be adequate to get started, although I am seriously doubting it’ll have enough oomph to move what I would like to see as a final concept. There are a whole lot of unknowns in the middle of things so we shall see.

If you can’t fix it… force it… Right?
