Funding Expensive Robotics Projects

Hi all,

I have this really big idea in mind for a robotics project. I'm not going to release details about what it is yet, but whatever it is, there are two problems that keep it from becoming a reality:

  1. It's very expensive, estimating around $5000, which is money I don't have available for doing this kind of stuff
  2. The robot is based off a film. For instance, if I wanted to build a Wall-E robot, do I have to contact Disney/Pixar to get permission to build?

So my questions is really what is the best strategy for getting this project off the ground? If the answer is crowdfunding, then how can I effectively move people to fund the project?

Thanks.

Thanks for your input

A bit more detail: most of the money is going to 12 Torxis servos for the legs, which totals to around $3500, and I’m estimating that I’ll need $1500 to do the rest. If I’m really going for it, I’ll post to LMR about full details about the project.

As for legal action, it’s basically cosplay, although the “costume” is fully automated and there’s no man that has to climb into the costume. I wouldn’t have to take legal action if all I’m doing is pretty much fan-based and I’m not building it for profit, right?
