Full size car steering servo continuous turn

I read the post about the servo used in your autonomous car, i need to know if thats a continuous turn servo or if its limited to 180 degrees. I want to purchase a continuous turn servo that plugs into a PWM output of a standard RC TX/RX system. The idea is a gear on the steering wheel and a gear on the servo with a chain drive, Like a bicycle. Please provide a link to such a servo if you have one. Thank you

Hello @TravisLab and welcome to the RobotShop community!

Could you share the link of the autonomous car you are talking about?

If you are looking for a servo I’d suggest you check out the Servo Motors section, there you can find one that suits your needs. Here are a couple of them:

But you will need to choose the model according to the speed and torque requirements of your application, here’s a tool that might help you out with that:

Good luck with your project

is this continuous turn? if not can you modify it to turn continuous?

The Torxis i00600 12V High Torque Servo Motor has a total travel of 270 degrees. Here are the full specs:

  • Up to 3200 oz-in peak 22.6 N-m) and 1600 oz-in (11.3 N-m) real continuous duty torque (100 in-lbf)
  • Uses standard RC PWM input command signal
  • Capable of 270 degree travel with extended range pwm input signal
  • All metal gears
  • Double roller bearing output shaft
  • 12 VDC Power, ~3A at full load
  • 60 degrees of travel as quick as 500 ms
  • Up to 270 degrees total travel
  • Rugged housing
  • Billet aluminum output horn included
  • 12 in. signal cable with servo connector
  • 12 in. power leads

I’m not sure if it is possible to turn it continuos. I’ve seen some tutorials on the internet that teach how to modify servos for continuous rotation but those regularly use micro servos, although the linked tutorial says:

This hack will work with just about any servo… but the ones that have the potentiometer contacts in a row will be the easiest (by far) to mod.

If someone else knows if it is possible to do so with the Torxis Servo Motor please chime in

Also, I found a comparison list of RC Servo Motors, here’s the link if you want to give it a look
