From Embedded Systems to Robotics: My First Robotic Arm Project

Hello everyone! I’m a physical chemist with considerable experience in embedded systems and I’m now applying that background to my first robotic-arm project.

My goal is to turn the concept into a functional machine while exploring the mechanical and control challenges involved.
I’ll be documenting the decisions, experiments and mistakes along the way and I’d value insights from experienced robotics builders.

For transparency, I’m also currently raising funds to help cover the project’s components.

That sounds like a fascinating project. Combining a background in physical chemistry with embedded systems should give you an interesting perspective on both the mechanical and control challenges.

For a first robotic-arm build, I’d pay particular attention to motor sizing, gearbox backlash, joint rigidity, position feedback, limit switches, power distribution, and how you plan to handle calibration and repeatability. It may also help to define the payload, reach, number of axes, and target positioning accuracy early, since those choices will drive much of the mechanical and control design.

Documenting the experiments and mistakes should make the project especially useful for others following along. Best of luck with the build.
