Fiber Optic transmission of serial communications

:bulb: Has anyone made a module that could be used with a dual fiber cable to transmit serial data from a PC serial port to an on-board controller (such as the SSC-32) and back?

I see it as a dongle-like device, which at one end plugs into a serial/USB port and a fiber cable plugs into the other end.

Perhaps an IR sensor could be hacked for this purpose?

I have a ‘bunch’ of working fiber cables salvaged from computer equipment and see them as a flexible tether between a 'bot and a PC.

If you’re coming out of a serial port, then you’re already limited to the baud rate of the serial port. You would need a special fiber optic cable driver board for your PC, and the identical hardware at the SSC32 end. Could be costly.

We run several pairs of fiber optic cable between the Surgeon’s console, Vision Stack and the Patient’s cart on our da Vinci Surgical Robot. Lots of very high baud rate communications circuits.

But remember, the SSC32 is limited in it’s baud rate anyway (like most other micro computer chips).

Dual fiber optic cables are a little more bulky. They are better at handling long transmission lengths.

Why not go wireless?

More for experimentation rather than a specific reason. I am very familiar with the limitations of the serial speed and how using high speed fiber for low speed serial communications may not make sense.

Thanks for your reply,

Hello.
Fiber optic communication is the efficient way for the serial communications. But as far as I know about the fiber optic communication, it was costly in the initial stage when it was newly evolved. But gradually all have started to use it and that ha brought its installation and maintenance price down. Most of the Telecom companies are turning their business to he fiber optic side. The word FIBER OPTIC comes like this. Its diameter is like our hair. So it is called fiber. And it is made from glass. And so the word optic. So the whole word become fiber optics.

perhaps there is some way to capitalize on the common TOS-link fiber connections used in audio equipment? never really had cause to look into this but if I did this is probably where I would start due to it being a fairly common comodity item.
