My son and I are interested in building a robot. Max has built several Lego robots, but is interested in building from scratch. I am an artists/woodworker/metalworker, I run a lab with 3d printers, Laser cutters, CNC etc and am comfortable with digging in to this kind of project. We need some guidance as to where to start and a bit of a plan.
This is a father son project and a way to help Max focus on something he picked, understand goal setting and follow through.
Max's thoughts: Max said,"Drive around the house by itself, not hit walls or obstacles, programable, ability to take over and drive, and with a grabber to grab stuff"
First - Welcome to LMR. Second - Can I come use you shop!!
Sounds like you have all the mechanical toys (tools) and skills to build the chassis. Some people like to start with their strong suit and add new material in small increments. Others want to start with the most unknown. Take a looks at the “tadpole” robot by LMR member CtC as a very complete well documentated robotics project.
Building a robot from scratch will require:
Plan or goal to works towards
Chassis
CPU
Batteries
Motors
Sensors
Actuators
LMR is great for getting direct answers to specific questions. Posting 5000 lines of code and asking what is wrong will likely get ignored. Posting 25 lines and a wiring diagram will likely get multiple responses.
LMR also has a Shout Box which is a chat room for online members. OK for general chit/chat but dialog is not saved. Use the forum for specific questions as just one users answer may not be appropriate.
