ED-209 Biped Scout

Where do i start. mmmmmm. Ok introduction first. My name is Mike and i am from Nelson New Zealand. I am 58 have been into robotics for 40yrs and can build most things mechanicly. But my downfall is programming like a lot of ppl i guess. I have rovers to bipeds, you can see from my website the type that i build. robosapienv2-4mem8.page.tl/ My ED-209 was inspired by the Robocop movie and i bought a 15"kit but never built it for some reason. so acquired a scout with 14 HSR5990tg servos from Tom [who is on here and Trossen forums] made a wooden stand to support him and thought that hey the ED-209 body that came with the kit would make a good head for the scout so set to and trimmed some weight of it and it will now be used it incorporate some electronics such as led scanner as in night rider. and some blue leds under the head to project to the ground. I am a model builder and this sort of fabrication is no problem for me.At present i am fabricating articulated extensions to the scout feet to conform to the rough terrain. These so far are made out of ply and balsa as molds for carbon fiber reproductions. Might take me a while to get pics up as i have a lot and document every step i do in my robotics. EDIT I am also known on many forums as 4mem8.

Here is a pic until i get more uploaded.Because of the larger head and balance i am fabricating extension feet to spread the weight and balance. and more authentic.

cool. i wish i had your servos. i working to a foot design were the main flat of the foot uses rubber contacts for grip and the “toes” as spring jointed so that they bend flat to the floor when walking kinda like the animation shown at the bottom. there are little rollers on the under side of the toe to create less friction.

your feet make the proportions up. that head is quite large never thought of using balsa wood.
keep up the good work.

yeah those are balsa plugs so i can make carbon fiber pieces from them, they will be very strong. the head in real life looks in proportion to the mech size, this will also enclose some electronics. All i need now is code to run it.

excellent CF. love the stuff. will give it a real nice finish.

Very well done. Those pictures were a joy to look at and I appreciate you taking the time to post all of them. I look forward to seeing more as time progresses!

have you thought about using anymore parts from the 209 kit?
would be interesting to see the other parts. the foot fabrication process is looking great.

Thanks for your kind comments Mike [Also my name as well] there will be more pics but slower in coming as i am in the process of finding a new job. i will post some pics of the ED-209 kit of parts as this is good ref for the scout mech. And yes Johny i will post some pics for you of ED kit.

Hope u enjoyed these as a ref for a 209 scout mech.**

That’s a great idea using the model as a reference. I saw some Youtube videos last night about the ED-209 and it was interesting to watch. They had a video about the ED-209 behind the scenes. It was interesting how they did some of the special FX. Robocop was one of the last movies to use stop action animation before the CG era took over. It’s kind of sad in a way, because it took away some of the creative aspects of doing things using real props. CG FX are great, but, it’s at the point that some movies are beyond real looking - to the point that they don’t look real if you know what I mean.

Its a cool looking kit Mike and useful for ref purposes.

thanks for sharing these pictures. very interesting parts. will you be replicating them? i recon you could vacuum form some of these shapes to fit over the SES…?

yeah it is a possibility that could be done in carbon fiber. Have to look at that later on.

that would look even better. im still working on the code so a while to wait for that. iv not managed to do anything with it tonight…

cant wait to see more pictures. keep em coming.!

Yeah Jonhy u could make sections and vacum them would look so cool. but first things first and that is to get it walking with 6 dof tall ask for me with limited knowledge of programming.Damn it annoys me that coding is my downfall in robotics.

ok less fabricating and more learning.
have you used any of the codes yet for sequencer (SSC)?
