Drive/controller

We have a scanner application where we have one motor moving up in 1/2 inch increments and another driving in the horizontal (steady motion not incremental). For testing we are using a 1.1" oriental motor. i want the simplest drive i can use to run both motors. Any suggestions? Oriental suggested a controller and 2 drives totalling $1100. I cant believe it costs that much to do this simple task. (Oriental pkp series motors - 1 is gear 1 not)
thanks for any help

Can you provide some details about the motor? What is the nominal voltage and current (perhaps stall current)?
How would you like to control the motor - RC? Serial? Knob?

I think the stall is 1.8v. Current is 1.5v per phase. We want to control with Matlab/serial. The motor is pkp series oriental motor. We have used Arduino controller for basic lab tests but not 2 motors independently. The user interface still needs to be figured out/programmed.
