DRF0107 kit - I want to replace mini remote

I have DRF0107 kit and want to replace the mini remote with a larger universal remote control to get more range and a much bigger battery. Can I do this? What is the IR encoding used by the mini remote … Sony NEC or what?

The IR receiver is actually what is most important - it is universal. You should even be able to use a television remote. You will need to run a program to decipher each button though.
