Does anyone know resistor codes?

Hey folks,

I am working on an IR thing, I don't understand 4k7... is that 4007? why is 7 after the k? Can I get it at radio shack? I'm an idiot but i used to know this... (give me anything you got)

basicly its equal to write

basicly its equal to write

4700 Ohm = 4,7KOhm = 4K7Ohm

its only a type of codification.

about the colors, just check this image:

Hey dude,4K7 means 4.700

Hey dude,

4K7 means 4.700 ohms, and yes, radioshack should have such a resistor hence it’s a “standard” value

edit: crap… sorry, I’m new to this forum, didn’t see the previous posts

hehe… lolz… more info is

For Cryin’ out loud! 4.7k WHY DON’T THEY JUST WRITE THAT?!?!?

Thanks folks for all the help --you just saved my 35 bucks… (i don’t have to buy the “ir upgrade”, just a few parts from good ol’ Radio Shack)

Never mind ignore this post I figured it out

Nope!

Not really - it’s asking for a password. I’d be prepared to concede to being stupid, though.

Just wait

…until you graduate to capacitors. Electronics noobs think of capacitors in uF (microFarads). Irritatingly, manufacturers don’t seem to have any sort of standard. Some of them use resistor colour codes and many put the first two significant figures of the capacitance in picoFarads. Some write the two significant digits followed by a third digit which is the exponent value in picoFarads.

What a nightmare.

Colour Code Aide Memoires

In https://www.robotshop.com/letsmakerobots/node/552 I rant about briefly discuss acronyms / mnemonics / aide memoires to help remember resistor colour codes. I thought this might be a better place for it. Anyone got any good ideas? Your difficult-to-remember acronym is: “BBROYGBVGW”

“Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain” sort of works, but you have to remember that the “in” is to be ignored and that black and brown come before it and and grey and white come after. Also, anyone outside the UK is now screaming "Who the hell is Richard?"

I think “Bad Boys Ravish Only Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly” might be a little tasteless for my son.

There are extra points for including the tolerance bands in the arcronym “BBROYGBVGWGSN” but, again, “Bad beer rots our young guts, but vodka goes well; get some now” is not suitable for a 7 year old.

Keep it CLEAN, y’all!!

…further…

… to add to the confusionment, there doesn’t seem to be an international standard decimal separator. In the UK, we use the period “.” (aka “decimal point”) and the comma “,” is a thousands seperator. So four thousand and twenty-eight point 9 is written 4,028.9. In France, for example, the “,” is the decimal separator and the “.” is the thousands, so our example becomes 4.028,9. What a nightmare.

If only the world was all one country.
