i am currently making a chess playing robot but after i plan to start making an Arduino drone do i need brushless motors or can i use 5v hobby dc motors instead with a l293n h bridge motor driver.

As far as I know, in drones, usually brushless motors are used.
Brushless motors have all the characteristics required for great drone design: high efficiency, wide speed ranges and overall high speed-torque capabilities . They are also relatively affordable and require comparatively less maintenance.
Now to run them, you need an ESC.
Not sure how easy is L293N to use for this.
