Difference between LiPo and Li-Ion

Hi to everybody
I’d like to power the servos of Phoenix hexapod using a low weight battery. I’m thinking about Lithium-ion battery (for example 12V 6800mAh).
Then I can use a TURNIGY 8-15A 6v UBEC to decrease the voltage. My question is: is this regulator only for LiPo or also for Li-ion battery. What happens if I use Li-ion battery to power all the servos? In other posts I saw people speaking only about LiPo battery.
Thanks

LiIon and LiPo utilize the same basic technology. The voltage of the cells are the same. LiPo is newer technology, can deliver higher current, and can be charged at higher rates. LiIon is older technology, delivers less current and can’t be charged as fast. I would not recommend a 12vdc battery. Ummm it should be more like 11.1vdc or 14.8vdc though. It is easier for a regulator to reduce 7.4vdc to 6vdc than it is to reduce 11.1vdc to 6vdc. You will get longer run times using the lower voltage pack.
