Cytron 13A Motor Controller Self Test Function not Working?

Hello All,

I recently bought two Cytron 13A, 5-30v single DC motor controllers for my robot project, however I’ve been having difficulty with them right off the back. I hooked up a 3s LiPo battery to green “power” terminals for for power, and also soldered on the “GND”, “PWM”, and “DIR” lines to an Arduino mega, but left the mega off for the self test. I only wired in the signal lines because it was convenient and I didn’t foresee any issues at the time. When I power up the motor controllers, they come on with the “green” power light, so I know I have power and presumably working boards. However, when I push and hold the “A” or “B” self-test buttons, my motors do not rotate, they simply buzz and make a tiny motion. The red “power” light on the board comes on, indicating the board is giving the motors power, which is encouraging. Motor wise, I’m using two 12v geared brushed DC motors from Pololu and I have each one wired up to the black “motor” terminals, one motor for each board. I’m honestly pretty stumped, it seems odd to me that TWO motor controllers would just go bad at the same time, I feel it’s more likely I’m overlooking something obvious or didn’t do something properly. Perhaps the self test function can’t turn a 30:1 geared motor?

I’d appreciate any feedback, and if anyone wants any more details I’d be happy to provide it! Thanks!

Hi Spyglass,

Can you attach good quality pictures of your setup (wiring etc) ?
Also, have you tried the motors directly on the power source (lipo) to confirm the motors themselves ?

Thanks for the reply DiaLFonZo,

I’ve included a couple pictures of my wiring setup. Let me know if they’re ok or you want to see something different. It hadn’t occurred to me to to directly try the battery on the motor terminals, but that was a good idea! I tried my 3 cell which was reading 11.5 volts on both motors, and neither one rotated. I also tried a 4 cell reading 15 volts and still both of them did not rotate. Perhaps both motors are dead?

Thanks!

Hi Spyglass,

That would be the issue but they might be fine as well.
Make sure the HUB and/or the Wheel is not rubbing on your frame avoiding them to turn. (in the picture it could be a possibility)
