Current sensing vs. visible line tracking design

I’m looking to build a line tracking robot that will sense and follow a track of current-carying wire rather than a photo interrupter circuit following a black line drawn on the table top. Several years ago I saw a “Mowbot” demo’d at a homeshow that followed a direct track of burried low-voltage wire ~2" below the surface. For my purpose the application will just be a small toy-sized car. Has anyone seen a current sensing design that would apply here?

We’ll see if we can dig up some old documents on buried wire fence following, but i doubt we have this on hand. We have used 2 coils to sense the wire’s EMF, but the power was modulated to a specific frequency. Searching for “buried wire fence” online will reveal a multitude of projects and articles.
