Cottonwood Long Range UHF RFID Reader

My partner and I are doing a project in high school that involves RFID and we will be using the Cottonwood Long Range UHF RFID Reader. However, we have a few questions…

  1. Is this module compatible with the LilyPad Arduino?
  2. What types of tags will work with the module? (Any specifics?)
  3. What is the recommended antenna and its range?
  4. Can this be powered using a battery?

Q1) Is this module compatible with the LilyPad Arduino?

Yes, you can directly connect it to the UART of the Lilypad Simple and LilyPad Arduino (a.k.a. ATmega328). For the LilyPad USB, we recommend using this logic level converter.

The serial protocol is available in the Resources section on the manufacturer wiki.

Q2) What types of tags will work with the module? (Any specifics?)

To be compatible, the tags need to use the same frequencies and protocol:

] Working Frequency: China standard (920~925MHz), American standard (902~928MHz), European standard (865~868MHz) , 840MHz~960MHz /:m]
] Protocol: ISO18000-6C (EPC GEN2), compatible ISO18000-6A/B/:m]

We recommend the ones from the same manufacturer.

Q3) What is the recommended antenna and its range?

This one is the one that’s recommended by the manufacturer.

Q4) Can this be powered using a battery?

Yes, it can be powered by battery. The manufacturer recommends a supply that is capable of doing 5V / 2A.

Hope this helps,

Thank you, this was extremely helpful!
